Aphrodite - The goddess of love and beauty. Aphrodite is maybe the second most famous Olympian after Zeus. She is not as powerful as Hera or Athena for example, but her beauty gives her power over many mortal and even immortal males. Aphrodite herself has experienced the onus of love. In one of the myths about the goddess, her heart is broken by the mortal Adonis.

She is also favoured for her craft skills in everything. She can make anything that women can, and her divine powers make her the best. During the Trojan war she helped the Greeks, because of Odysseus. Athena is a very poor looser though. One of the myths about her tells us thatonce she found a woman who could knit much better than the goddess. After a competition, which Athena lost, she turned the woman into a three. Anoher interesting myth reveals us the way she was born. She jumped out of Zeus's head ready for battle.

Demeter - The goddess of fertility Demeter is favored by all Greeks. Thera are even some festivals that are especially for her. One of the myths about her, gives us the ancient way of thinking about the change of seasons. In it, Demeters daughter, Perphesona is kidnapped by Hades, who loved her. In order to take her, Hades gave her an apple, but she ate only half of it. This saved her, because in this way Hades could have her only for six months every year. When he had her and Demeter is sad, the seasons were Autumn and Winter and when her daughter was again with her mother and Demeter was happy, the seasons were Summer and Spring.

Dionisys - A god that is an antipode of the Greek gods. He is fat, drinks a lot and doesnt possess the sublime beaty of all other Olympians. He is the god of the wine and pleasures. He is the leader of the Maenads, who infamous for their atrocities while drunk. It is believed that he has inspired a specific and clandestine cult, dedicated to please him. It is also believed that unlike all Greek gods, he wasnt immortal at the very beginning but was killed first and then reborn.

Hephaestus - Also known as Hepahaistos. The son of Hera was born lame. There are two versions about his life. The first one says that his angry mother kicked him out from the sacred mountain. The other one is that it was Zeus who kicked him out after a quarrel with Hera. Eventually both versions concur that after falling all day long he landed at island of Lemnos, therefore sacred to him.

Hera - The queen of all Greek gods, wife of Zeus. SAhe is known to be quite beatiful and the patron of marriage for everyone - mortals and immortals. A central figure in many myths.

Hermes - Sonn of Zeus and Maia. God of athletics, commerce, thieving and in everything that required alacrity. He invented the lyre, which he gave to Apollo and received caduceus as an exchange. The lyra had nine strings in honour to the nine Muses.

Poseidon - God of seas and earthquakes. Known as the EARTh SHAKER. Brother of Zeus and maybe the second most important god. He was almost as powerful and famous as Zeus and had full control over the seas.

Zeus - The top god. The leader of all. Zeus doesnt have a particular field, which he is good at. He is the ruler of everything. He was born and one of the few who survived from his father Kronoss. Kronoss was afraid that one of his children would be stronger than him and ate them all. Zeus's mother hid him and in this way he survived. After that he defeated his father and set all other gods free. Those gods are believed to be of the first generation - Hera, Poseidon, Hades and of course Zeus.

Constellations

There are many constellations but have you ever wondered how they were created? Here is the Greek version about some of them.

Orion - Orion was a mighty hunter, who was given the ability to walk on water, by his father Poseidon. One day he met a very beautiful woman called Merope and wanted to marry her. His father, the king of the island of Chios, told him that he could have her but not before he had slained all predators at the island. Orion did that but the hypocritical king called the god of Wine Dionysus and asked him make Orion asleep. Once that was done the king blinded Orion and threw him on the beach. With the help of Hellios, Orion was cured and determined to have his revenge. But the king and his had already escaped. Orion couldnt find them but met the goddess Artemis and spent all his time hunting with her. That made Apollo, Aretme's brother jealous and he sent a giant scorpion to kill Orion. But the hunter managed to kill the scorpion by taking it so far into the sea, that the hunter looked like a rock. Apollo was so determined to kill Orion that he called Artemis and challenged her to hit the rock with her arrow. The proud Artemis accepted the challenge and hit the rock with her arrow. Soon the waves brought the dead body of Orion. When Artemis saw that she cried for two days and then lift the body and put in the sky.

Cassiopeia and Andromeda - Cassiopeia was the wife of King Cepheus. She was very beautiful and proud and even told the sea nymphs that her daughter Andromeda and herself were much more beautiful than the nymphs. The divine creatures complained to Poseidon about that and he sent immedeately a dragon to kill all people at the island. The monster started killing denizens of the island immedeately. King Cepheus consulted an oracle and was told that in order to save his people he had to sacrifice his daughter. The king sent Andromeda immedeately to the beach and tied her to a rock. When the Dragon was just about to devour her, Perseus appeared carried by the wing sandals given to him by Hermes. After a long battle, he killed the dragon and married Andromeda. In few years Cassiopeia died and Poseidon put her in the sky in a very uncomfortable position. She was sitting in a chair with the form of "W". Near her he put Andromeda after she died.

Gemini - Castor and Pollux were twin brothers who loved each other very much. Their parents were Zeus and Leda of Troy. They both were great athletes and won many competitions at the Olympics. They also joined Jason and helped him retrieve the Golden Fleece. When they came back to their island they had a quarrel with two men and Castor who wasnt immortal was killed. Polux prayed to Zeus to let him kill himself and join his brother in the underworld. Zeus said that he couldnt do that for Pollux was immortal. Instead of that he turned both brothers into twin stars that formed the constellation Gemini.
